If you’ve ever sat around a mahjong table long enough, you know this: the conversations matter just as much as the game.
Table Talk is where we’ll share tips, stories, clarifications, and thoughtful takes on American Mahjong — the kind of things that come up between hands, during tile shuffles, and while someone’s inevitably asking, “Wait… how do you play this at your table?”
Before we get into all of that, we want to start at the beginning — with who we are, and how Mahj House Rules came to be.
Born from friendship, laughter, and tiles
Mahj House Rules was born from friendship, laughter, and a shared love for the game that brings people together. For founders Brittany and Melissa, Mahjong quickly became more than tiles.
It became community.
It became routine.
It became a reason to gather — and stay a little longer.
Brittany picked up the game in 2021 as a new mom hungry for community and a mental spark outside the office. The moment she heard the click of the tiles and saw the eye-catching colors, she was all in. What started as curiosity quickly grew into passion, eventually leading her to launch Mahj Social Club, where she taught hundreds of players across Central Texas and beyond.
Melissa, a former teacher turned stay-at-home mom, found the same magic in Mahjong. She was drawn to the laughter, the camaraderie, and the rare chance to do something just for herself. Together, Brittany and Melissa realized they weren’t alone and that so many women were finding their way back to connection through this game.
Why “Mahj House Rules”?
If you’ve played Mahjong for any length of time, you know one thing is always true: every table plays a little differently.
Our name, Mahj House Rules, is inspired by exactly that.
House rules are part of what makes Mahjong special. They reflect friendships, traditions, regions, and the people around the table. We don’t believe there’s only one “right” way to play — we believe the game evolves with the players.
That philosophy carries through everything we do.
Each tile set we create is inspired by a different house — a place where people gather. Think ranch house, lake house, and beyond. Each one tells a story, just like the tables they’re played at.
